She is missing one ear but she still can hear little. Her ex-husband, Sewell chop off her ear and ate the ear back in the day when they were married. He went to jail because of what he has done to Lulu’s ear. Since then, she will always be terrified of her ex-husband if he comes near her. There are different settings in the story but I will explain one setting found in the work. From the story, Thursday, the day Rudy and Lulu met each other at the art show and made love after is a symbol of how they connect each other at that time period. They continue to go out on Thursdays when they become emotionally wrapped up in one another to spend time because Lulu is off on every Monday and Thursday but the symphony orchestra rehearsed Mondays. Thursday is a bad symbol for two things because one night at the diner on Thursday, Lulu discover that her Ex-husband Sewell released from jail. Rudy did not know about her previous marriage, her ear, and the fact that Sewell was in prison so she had to face her fears to Rudy since she was terrified of Sewell so that way Rudy can understand and protect her.
