Crochet has lived in the small town of Hathaway for all sixty-five years that she has been alive. The only real social gathering place in Hathaway is Saint Lawrence Catholic Church. Ms. Crochet was raised to believe in Catholicism, and still practices the religion. When she was growing up, she was only ever exposed to people who had the same belief system as her. As she grew older, however, America and the world became more connected than ever. She began to observe how the media portray other cultures and religions and how negative news stories were. Although television and other news outlets may have been biased toward people of other ethnicities, it was her parents’ lessons about the world which she truly retained throughout life. They believed that the differences with which humans are born are not the fault of the person, and therefore one should not hold prejudices against another for these uncontrollable reasons. They also believed that religion was the most important aspect of life, and should be treated as such. Her parents presented the world to her with these beliefs, and she has maintained them. She was accepting of the many changes in America related to racial segregation, which was a very prominent issue during her childhood and adolescence. She reacts to our changing world in the way that she does due to her upbringing. Her perception of the world influenced how she carried out all of her decisions. This was an even more challenging living arrangement when considering that six people occupied the home. She lived a modest life and understood what true poverty was like. Wasting food and procrastinating were considered extremely terrible offences. Her family was accustomed to the lifestyle and made the best of what they had. The Crochet family persisted through the tough times and has been able to live a considerably more comfortable lifestyle. Ms. Crochet’s perseverance has shaped her current lifestyle. Not only was she presented with extreme challenges, but she was also taught how to handle these challenges and think optimistically.
She learned to utilize everything to the maximum effectiveness and not waste opportunities. She has worked at the same job since she graduated from a two-year trade school. She doesn’t believe she needs a raise and is grateful that she is able to keep the position. This is why she is very unsympathetic with the current generation of working class people and their feelings of entitlement and instant gratification. Her personality would be drastically different if she were to have been born into a more luxurious lifestyle and not learned how to handle drastic
