Patriarchy is a social system that is controlled by a group of men, it is very "male-dominated"(Johnson 153) and everything just happens to revolve around the men. Within this group of men there is a man that is in charge of all of the other men. Anything a man does is seen as great. If a woman wanted to become a manger, CEO or any "superior position" (Johnson 153), as Allan Johnson had stated in his article Patriarchy, people " would wonder how she 'll measure up against a man in the same position" (153). I agree with Johnson on this because women are constantly compared with men and are seen as the subordinate. To the household, where in society the man has to be the head of the household while the wife is at home cleaning and taking care of the kids. Also children take their fathers last name and women change their last name when they get married to a man. The biggest example of patriarchy is the wage gap, women get paid less than men, even though they do the same work. Thus this gender pay-gap goes straight into the category of sexism. In this patriarchal society that we live in, women are seen as inferior when compared to men. In Judith Lorber article "Night to His Day" she explains that "if men and women are doing the same task,...to maintain gender separation, often the tasks are given different job titles" (Lorber 58). I have never thought about the job titles that are given out until I read this part, and it is completely true. "When our [woman 's] behavior is not acceptable ...when we are being independent, going our own way, living whole lives ...being self assertive." (Pharr 168). Pharr is right, women are called a lesbian when they go out of their way to make their lives better without needing a man. Sexism plays a role homophobia because homophobia is the dislike against homosexual people. If you are sexist, odds are that you are going to be homophobic against what ever gender you are sexist with. We will continue to live in a patriotic world, until who knows when.
