In an article by Morley & Dunstan regarding domestic violence, “Women's structural position of disadvantage, or gender inequality, has been recently identified across a wide range of cross-cultural studies as a causative factor of domestic violence” (Morley & Dunstan, 2016). The article also quotes Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull as saying, “Violence against women begins with disrespecting women”. Seventy one percent of domestic violence incidents that are severe enough to cross the criminal threshold are perpetrated against women with sixty one percent perpetrated by a current or former intimate partner. Domestic violence makes up seventeen percent of all violent crimes (Walby, et al. 2014). It is sad that our society, not only allows such treatment of women, but also encourages it through patriarchal ideals. Also, according to Walby, et al., when speaking of gender-based violence, the greater the gender inequalities, the more likely that conflict would lead to violence (Walby, et al. 2014). As women gain more autonomy, the family dynamics start to change, challenging historic entitlements held by men in society. As these power dynamics evolve, they come in conflict with traditional patriarchal beliefs about entitlement to use coercive control tactics by those in power.
