Patient's Skin Damage In The Epidermis

Decent Essays
Based on the information given, it can be determined that the patient has skin damage in the epidermis, as well as in the dermis. The epidermis has specialized cells that act as a barrier to the physical and biological environment. When the patient was burned this caused an opening in the barrier the epidermis created. With that, when the opening was created the heat was able to reach the Merkel cell which is a part of the epidermis layer of skin. The Merkel cells are touch receptors which are associated with the sensory nerve endings. Furthermore, the next skin layer that was damaged was the dermis which helps with maintaining body temperature. When the patient was burned their body temperature rose and the nervous system signaled the sweat

On Thursday, August 24, 2017 I got the experience to follow Horizon Specialty Hospital of Henderson’s Wound Care Team. During this experience, I was able to witness the removal of a wound VAC (vacuum assisted closure) and surgical stitches, different methods of wound monitoring and discussed the healing process. For new admissions, the Wound Care Team does a physical examination of the body, looking for any wounds, bruises, scars, tubes and IV placements. They take pictures, measurements and note the location of the wound. Since the hospital still uses paper charting, they handwrite all of their notes and upload them to the patients' medical chart when done with their assessment.…

Subjects were placed in heated water & wrapped in thermal blankets with the purpose of elucidating the connection between an increase in skin & core temperatures & an increase in sympathetic neural activity. This study also sought to determine if localised cooling of the hand triggered a local or systemic response. This study sought out to test several hypotheses; It was hypothesized that healthy humans subjected to heat stress will experience increased cholinergic & adrenergic activity, inducing vasodilation in peripheral cutaneous blood vessels & activation of subcutaneous eccrine glands. The activation of eccrine glands is expected to trigger the secretion of sweat which will result in a decrease in skin resistance. In response to heat stress, it is hypothesized that the body will maintain core body temperature, regardless of peripheral temperature fluctuations.…

Burns were traditionally treated with skin grafts, taking sections from parts of a patient’s body or growing sheets of skin artificially and grafting them over the burn. However, the grafts could take weeks or months to heal and during the recovery time, the patient could suffer infections because of the damage to the skin. As a result, Professor Jorg C. Gerlach and colleagues of the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburg’s McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine developed the skin gun. The skin gun was first introduced in 2008.…

According to Grossman and Porth (2014), burns cause fluid loss from the vascular space, interstitial space, and intracellular space. The fluid loss, especially in those with large surface area burns, can cause hypovolemic shock quickly, which can cause hypoperfusion of organs and ultimately multiple organ dysfunction, such as renal failure. Fluids can help reduce the risk of kidney damage. The provider should supportively explain these concepts of fluid loss, hypovolemic shock, and the prevention of kidney injury using simpler terms without jargon. Informing him of these concepts by explaining fluid loss similar can be done by using the example of a skin injury like a laceration or a burn.…

Excess heat loss is accomplished by the process of vasodilation, the expansion of blood vessel size, which allows for increased blood flow toward the skin’s surface (Boundless). The increase of warm blood at the skin’s surface allows the body to release heat from the skin through radiation (Boundless). The increase in body temperature also prompts the production of sweat, which cools the body as it dries by whisking heat away through the…
