The second safety goal I was observing was to “identify patients correctly”. The national safety goal recommends the use at least two ways to identify a patient. The patient’s name and date of birth are prime identifiers. During my clinical rotation, my nurse and I were able to always identify our patients using two methods. By asking the patient to state their name and date of birth while we make sure the stated name and date of birth matched their hand band. And, the fact that we can also scan the patient’s hand band is one extra safety measure in administrating medication to the right patient. Therefore the safety goal of identifying the patient using two separate identifiers was met. I really like the fact that each patient must be validated
