Patient safety in nursing and the overall healthcare naturally stands out as a topic of great concern for nurses themselves as well as patients and their families. Focusing on patient safety is essential in order to establish a principle of safety throughout the entire health system, so that all will be aware of where, when and how to avoid errors and adverse events. I was assigned to a patient from 8am-1pm on September 16, 2016, who was admitted to Morristown medical center on September 15, 2016. Her name is M.M and she is 45 years old. She came in from the emergency department complaining of vomiting and diarrhea. Before I list the steps for safety for my patient. I want to first tell you about my patient.

Another factor that can be done is placing a sign in the patient room stating “NPO”. So it can be a reminder to caregivers in all departments not to give the patient anything to eat and it could also be a reminder for the patient not to eat anything. Often patients are not allowed to eat anything before surgery and if the patient do eat something the surgery may have to be postpone for another day or later time. Minimizing hospital room clutter can help with patient safety by eliminating or organizing unnecessary materials and …show more content…
She lives with her husband at home and two kids. She stated that she lives in a one family home and have only 5 steps to climb to get into her home. The husband and mother were present with the patient at the time of my visit. She stated that she has good support from her family. There is no evidence or suspicion on patient M.M. of abuse. No past history of violence on patient. Patient stated that where she lives is safe because it is very spacious and she have lots of help at home.
For fall risk assessment. Patient M.M does not have any history of falls. She is continent of voiding and moving her bowels. She is currently on heparin, which is a blood thinner that have a side effect of dizziness, joint pain and stiffness. Another safety measure can be having assistance in the bathroom just in case any of these side effects that may affect ambulation occur. The patient has an IV infusion equipment that tethers her when ambulating. Patient M.M cognitive level is stable. She is oriented x3. So, overall that gives her a score of 6 on the fall risk assessment tool which is moderate fall
