Introduction:
I decided to do my study on something I already knew a little about, Patient Placement at Dignity Health in Chandler, AZ. This department decides where the patients at both Mercy Gilbert and Chandler regional hospital will be placed. I work in the adjoining office of Nursing Support and Float pool for both of the hospitals. I do the staffing and handle sick calls right next to the Patient Placement office. The Patient Placement people use three desks, two of them are right by each other with the third desk off to the side. They have phones on their desks and computers. Their …show more content…
They take calls from doctors requesting special floors for their patients, and from charge nurses saying their floors can not take anymore patients until they have discharges. They help decide when the hospital is full or when they need to open up what is called an overflow area (these are extra rooms that are not assigned a special name and can usually take a variety of patients except maternity or ICU patients). I am in total respect of this department because they have so much they must handle.
Conclusions: I used to think that my department was the heart of the hospital and we ran the hospital. I was mistaken, I have learned different since watching the Patient Placement department. I have learned that it is very hard to figure out where to place patients and that it is very important to place them in the right rooms and the right floors. I learned that you can have what you might consider two of the same types of patients that they might be different in the type of care they require. They might have one patient that requires more care than another because of age or mental capacity so they go to a floor that has more nurses or certified nursing assistants. The patient placement department must learn what charge nurses, doctors and house supervisors like on each floor. The Patient placement people as I stated earlier run the hospital in my opinion. I figured out that the people that work in Patient Placement need to be very calm.
