To me, a career in medicine exemplifies the perfect amalgamation between the fascinating precision of science and the compassionate and holistic approach of patient centred care. Given the opportunity, I would love nothing more than to gain the skills and knowledge to combine the two.
My devotion to the sciences is reflected in my choice of A level subjects, and my school award for chemistry received last year further illustrates my unfaltering enthusiasm. Moreover, I was able to excel in AS level Sociology illustrating my commitment to an antireductionist world view, enhancing my understanding of public health and the vital role of health promotion in patient care. Here, I had the privilege of witnessing the importance of working effectively within a multidisciplinary team and the essential role played by each valued member. Observing consultations, I witnessed how doctors manage patients with compassion and respect. I learnt that actively listening to the ideas, concerns and expectations of patients ensures high quality, patient centred medical care. Clearly the role of effective communication cannot be understated. I also saw how mentally and physically demanding this job can be; prioritising tasks, decision making and formulating management plans whilst working long hours is challenging. I have spent much time contemplating the pros and cons of a medical career. I have no doubt that helping people in their time of need is a privilege that more than justifies the challenges it
