Healthcare is a growing and increasingly dynamic field. The complexity of the practice environment and added stress on healthcare workers threatens the ability of those workers to provide high quality, safe, and efficient care. Consequently, this causes nursing dissatisfaction, burnout, and high nursing turnover rates. Contributing to this problem is the decrease in the time the nurse can spend at the bedside. Specific examples include documentation, searching for items, phone calls, alarms, assisting other staff, and communicating with family, physicians, and other team members. Therefore, the introduction of technology aimed at reducing demand on nurses and increasing the amount of time the nurse can spend with patients will provide a more manageable workload and contribute to increased safety and improved patient care.

For example, the smart badge provides a way to keep both nurses and their patients safer. The integration of smart badge technology into nursing call systems with real time locating systems (RTLS), enables the nurse to press a button when needing assistance. Accordingly, the nursing unit, and security personnel are instantly notified that help is needed and the RTLS displays the exact location, (Mckay, 2015). Smart badge technology also decreases alarm fatigue. When the nurse enters the patient room where the call alarm is sounding, the alarm is automatically cancelled, thus enabling the nurse to begin direct care, rather than searching for a button to stop the alarm, (McKay,
