Throughout this department the use of total patient care or sometimes referred to as the case method is used. “The premise of the case method is that one nurse provides total care for one patient during the entire work period” (Yoder-Wise., 2015, p. 233). This type of care is used in critical care and many time in the (ED). The goal is to help the patient thorough the caring process and have a higher level of consistency. The (ED) commonly have a various range of patient population as well as being culturally diverse. The consistent care received is also congruent with helping the patient feel comfortable with the providers of care and this in turn increases the caring dynamic. Within the (ED), the case method is the utmost successful delivery care model due to the nature of the reason for visiting the hospital. In an emergency situation the stress level of the patient would rise, and if the nursing professionals caring for the patients were to alternate frequently this would increase the patient anxiety and decreasing the patient’s success of recovery. This type of delivery care model also helps with patient satisfaction, ensuring they have consistent care and the need for repeating information to the nursing staff is eliminated. The nursing staff in this unit provides care to all the patients, separating the tasks and utilizing a team effort. Each nurse has a specific job duty, for instance, one nurse administers the medications to all of the clients. The team nursing delivery model is the best model for this unit. Each nurse may have a specific task but each nurse also can evaluate each client and monitor their needs and act accordingly by collaboration with the other staff members. The patient population being served in this unit would vary in age, sex, and economic status. The clients on this unit would be experiencing some type of emotional problems, mental illness, possibly suicide attempts or ideation, and suffer from a multitude of mental/physical problems. “Many institutions and community health agencies currently use the team nursing method. Inpatient facilities may view team nursing as a cost-effective system because it works with an expected ratio of unlicensed to licensed personnel” (p.237).
