Angela is 17 year-old girl who is referred to your clinic by her high school counselor due to issues surrounding severe shyness and anxiety.
Angela was born in the Sacramento, where her parents, Ryan and Amber, who met while attending California State University. Shortly after Angela’s birth, the couple moved to Atlanta, GA. Ryan works as an engineer for a large firm in Atlanta. Until Angela was 6 years old, Amber worked part-time as an accountant from home, so that she could focus on her daughter. After this time, she began working outside of home, full-time, for an accounting firm. A year later, when the couple became unintentionally pregnant with their son Alex, Amber choose to return to work shortly after her maternity leave had ended. Entering elementary school she began to have some discipline and learning difficulties. Her teachers noted that she was quiet and reserved around her classmates. Over the course of the next two years, it was discovered that Angela was having issues with her hearing due to fluid in her inner ear. This was remedied with a medical procedure, and soon her learning improved greatly, however, socially she remained reserved. Through the years, her quietness often caused her to be a target of other children’s teasing, which lead to greater reluctance to engage with others. Her discomfort with socializing made it difficult to make and keep friends. Angela grew to be a solitary person with the exception of her long-time friend, Tina, whom she has known since 3rd grade. Tina is the only person that she feels comfortable with, feeling “completely free to be herself.” Although, she would like to be more social, she finds it “just too
