An internship is normally a work task a student completes after a series of classes to gain a degree in a particular field they think they’ll love, whether they still love it after they’ve completed that journey is based upon a multitude of criteria. Luckily, I have found that I quite enjoy fashion and working in retail throughout this internship at Dress Barn. Occasionally students find that what they thought they were getting into, is actually completely different than what they expected. Especially when reading about a profession on paper versus seeing it up closer in real life. When I started college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study or achieve with my life.…

My internship experience was experiential, very educational, and stressful at times. I will never be able to thank you enough, Dr. Wigley, because of you, I was given the opportunity to ask about Allied’s internship program when they were our guest speaker in our Intro to PR course of fall semester 2015. Summer of 2016 I was interested in attaining experience in the real world of PR, so I had originally conversed with former Senior Publicist, Kelsey of Allied’s Hispanic division because I was very intrigued and knew I always wanted to have a profession where I could utilize my bilingual expertise. I emailed her my resume and later received an interview request with Tonya. It ended up being a group interview, which ended up going well for me because I answered every question she asked the group.…

The FULE House provides housing for up to six Bethel students each year, all of whom regularly attend Urban Homeworks Seminars and participate in weekly community engagement. The experience also requires students to take Intentional Urban Living, through which they explore the meaning of community and the unique issues that arise in a city setting. Professor Harley Schreck, whose participation with the FULE House traces back to 1991, served as the most recent Course Instructor and FULE House Advisor. “[Students] are fully involved in the neighborhood,” he says, “volunteering with various organizations, getting involved in neighborhood issues, and learning how to be responsible, engaged citizens.”…

I have found that, along with being integrated with graduate recruitment, work experience increases the employability of interns by improving their networking and professional skills, putting them in an advantageous position in the competitive graduate market. However, the value of these benefits depends on the career choice of the individual but overall it should remain beneficial, unless it is unpaid and not followed by a job offer, in which case the benefits are greatly diminished. Despite this, I believe work experience would be beneficial to an individual’s future career based on their improved position in the graduate job market, no matter what career they choose, and increased job satisfaction. Looking into the future, with the number of graduates growing each year, it seems inevitable that the value of work experience will continue to rise relative to that of a degree, indicating that work experience will become increasingly beneficial when competing in the graduate job market. Currently, however, academic programmes are regarded superior due to the lack of research into the effectiveness of internships which diminishes the legitimacy of such programmes.…
