Pathos In Supersize Me

Improved Essays
Morgan spurlock uses pathos most effectively to persuade his audience during his movie Super Size Me. By using the appeal of pathos, spurlock makes his audience feel innocence, disgust, and fear. The method Morgan uses to attract innocence is through the use of children. In my opinion children are the most important factor, because they are seen as a group that does not know any better. Observing kids in their schools that look overweight and getting little exercise and nutritional food allows for viewers to relate to their own children. By seeing the children that are relatively overweight at a young age automatically puts the blame on the parents. By having his crew film him throwing up really catches his viewers attention and makes them second guess the food they buy from McDonald’s and it has them in fear of what it could do to them. By showing this clip, Spurlock receives the exact attention that he wants!
Another example is when Spurlock finds a disgusting long black hair in his salad from McDonald’s and continues to eat it, which puts a bad image on McDonald’s food. Spurlock also inserted a video clip of an obese individual who is receiving surgery. He shows this clip so the audience knows what an obese person has to go through to stay alive. Not only does he have his viewers in disgust now, he also has them in

He constantly confirmed his points by giving hard facts and supporting them with evidence. The most important facts in the documentary were so explicit because Spurlock presented them in an exciting and eye-catching manner to intrigue his intended audiences- mostly kids, young adults, and parents. He used graphs, charts, cartoons, and animations to efficiently display his data. For example, when Spurlock shows how much money food companies spend on advertisements per year, the animation was not only funny and interesting, but it was also simple and straightforwardly understandable. He smoothly exhibited that fast food companies spend an enormous amount of money on marketing and promotion while healthy food companies, in comparison, only spend a small amount of money.…

However there is one voice that stands out the most and that would be a man’s voice that stated, “Kids are obese for two reasons. They have voracious appetites and they don’t exercise enough.” After that statement, Dr. Mark Hyman came on to the screen to tell people that it seemed that the food industry was sending the message that it was the consumers fault that they were fat and they just needed to exercise more and eat less. The saying “eat less exercise more” may not be the answer that everyone believes it to be, it seems that for more than a century people believed this saying was the answer to the epidemic in America. Persuading someone to take your side in an argument is not an easy task to accomplish. There are many things a person must learn in order to become an effective persuader. In the movie twelve angry men, persuasion plays a huge role; as the jury has to decide whether the boy (who is accused of murdering his father) is guilty or innocent. This movie is a great example of ad hominem; which is a logical fallacy in which the argument is countered by attacking the person, their motive, or other things relating to the person who is making the argument. In the movie, every juror is convinced that the boy is guilty of the crime; but there is one juror, juror number eight pleads not guilty.…

Reyna Grande’s, The Distance Between Us, is a memoir written with the recurring appeal to the reader’s pathos. Grande uses the rhetorical strategy to keep the reader’s interest and to help them make personal connections to the story. Grande’s use of pathos helps to show not only the importance of understanding the immigrant experience, but also the importance of following your dreams. For example, the first chapters of the memoir are predominately about Grande and her siblings’ experience living with their Abuelita Evila in Mexico.…

Obamas speech was calculated and structured with many rhetorical strategies playing to his favor, so that his overall message was easily communicated, and both viewers and possible voters were able to understand and connect with his ideas. Two rhetorical strategies that seemed to aide his speech the most were the use of pathos and repetition. His reasoning for choosing these were probably due to the fact that this was his first speech as an official presidential candidate, and he wanted to be persuasive and precise on exactly what the forefront of his campaign was about and what he plans to do if elected. Where pathos appeals to ones emotion, it allows for a connection on a more personal level, which ultimately would further a greater sense of purpose or reason to get involved in what could be done. Obama said, “Beneath all the differences of race…
