Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragedy about two star-crossed lovers. Romeo has just killed Tybalt, so he goes to Friar Lawrence for help, and threatens to kill himself because he is distraught that he has been exiled. The Friar, who is the archetype sage mentor, uses pathos to try to console Romeo. Friar Lawrence tells Romeo, “Killing that love which thou hast vowed to cherish…Go get thee to thy love, as was decreed / Ascend her chamber, hence and comfort her” (Shakespeare 3.3.146-164). The Friar uses pathos by using Romeo’s love for Juliet to persuade him to compose himself, and go speak to her.
