There were many political conflicts taking place at this time. The people of Salem were split in two groups. These two groups consisted of people that wanted to separate from Salem Town and become Salem Village and people that wanted to stay unified. Those that were in support of being separated from Salem Town were mostly farming individuals and those that were in support of staying together as Salem town were usually people of the wealthier class. The group that was in favor of separating thought the town was too individualistic. They believed that profiting for yourself while others suffered was not the traditional Puritan way and felt that it was a sin. There was a family at the head of each group. The Porter’s headed the anti-separation while the Putnam family led the group in favor of splitting up. Salem Village tried for a long time to leave Salem Town and create Salem Village. This caused high tensions throughout Salem, and the tension only heightened when the Putnams brought in a new reverend, Samuel Parris, to be the reverend of the town. The anti-separationists did not support Reverend Parris as they thought he was being paid too much. These people showed their feelings by refusing to pay taxes, resulting in the Parris family to be in quite a financial stress (#4.) Because of the difficult financial situation for the Parris family, it isn’t a surprise
