I am at Lafayette High School for my field placement with one social worker for the entire school body of about 3,000 students. She does a lot of independent work that doesn’t involve any group work with any other faculty. Since she is the only social worker for the entire school she can become overwhelmed with trying to meet with all the students that may need support. She does her best to reach every student sent to her office but it is impossible for one person to give the proper care necessary for students to be successful at school so she has to reach out to outside community agencies. Once a student decides they want to get counseling sessions more often my supervisor can refer them to an outside counseling agency to come to the school weekly so students can get a more intense and in-depth therapy session. Weekly she facilitates a trauma group with four students who has tested high on a trauma scale …show more content…
I really like this theory because it focuses on the goals that need to be accomplished while having a leader be the motivator behind completing goals. It helps the leader when the client sees the payoffs of the goals that were set, which gives more motivation. Helping individuals identify and achieve goals, clearing away obstacles, offering appropriate rewards along the way, are all responsibilities of leadership in path-goal theory (Tools, 2015). Understanding the characteristics and the task characteristics of the theory helps me match my supervisors leadership style so I know her approach to the group. She has a directive leadership approach which she explained to them at the beginning of therapy what she hopes they will get out of it and what they will be doing. She is also very supportive to the students and their feelings by offering alternatives to solutions and different approaches students can take when talking about an

I recently interviewed a clinical caseworker at the East St. Louis Department of Child and Family Services office. He received his Master's in Social Work from Washington University and is a licensed clinical social worker. We discussed the various responsibilities that his job requires. He told me that he has an average caseload of around thirty-five cases. This caseload was regarded as a very overwhelming and strenuous amount of cases for only one person to handle.…

A quote I like to remind myself of when I feel overwhelmed comes from a personal wellness training session I attended, which states that “it is not selfish to refill your own cup so that you can pour into others. It is not just a luxury, it is essential.” As a social worker, the ability to self-reflect and take care of yourself before taking care of others is a critical skill for competent practice in this…

Module 6 was focused on leadership and followership; however, I think being a transactional leader using contingent reward is my biggest take away. Contingent reward is most important to me because I can set goals for someone and if they meet those goals I can give them a set reward. This might not be other leaders’ specific style, but I find it more effective to let people work for the things they want. The reward doesn’t have to be huge and can be something as simple as time off, an award, or maybe saying “you rocked it, way to go.”…

One can communicate in a way to indicate they are seeking for pity or in a rude manner. The Goals-Plan-Action theory was formed to describe the process that people use to form messages. Premises Reality therapy is based on the premise that people conduct themselves in certain ways in order to satisfy their needs (belonging, power, freedom, and fun, and survival) (Gladding, 2016). When people encounter problems, it is because one of these needs are not being met. Reality therapy is concerned with the cognitive and behavioral aspects of people, with the idea that people choose (the cognitive aspect) certain behaviors (the behavioral aspect) and that if people can become aware of their needs and find better ways to meet those need so that they do not practice destructive behaviors. Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is similar to reality therapy in the way that it is also concerned with cognition and behaviors.…

The process of integrative group therapy comes from the recognition that no single theory on its own can be effectively in group counseling to benefit each individual participating in the group. Therefore, group counseling must include a combination of cognitive and behavioral techniques because I believe that no single theory has all the answers. An Integrative approach to group counseling can be a necessary advantage for a leader to relate to each person with in the group. Norcross and Beutler (2008), believe that psychotherapy should have flexibility to be personalized to the different needs and contexts of the group and not applied as one theory fits all. In other word different group members will respond better to different therapeutic…

The coursework that was provided through this course also assisted in having a better knowledge base for my future practice based on empirically…

What I learned in this course In this course, I completed reading the text Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy written by Gerald Corey, which helped me have a better understanding of different types of theories and how they can benefit or help potential clients I may have. From all the theories studied in this course, there are some theories that I would like to apply that would be beneficial in helping me guide my clients to the right path. Person-centered therapy: In this therapy, Carl Roger recommended that the client would have the best help if the therapist motivates the client to concentrate on the problem then on the interpretation that others have on the situation.…
