The lack of a paternal role model in a young girl’s life can cause long lasting developmental issues among young women both conscious and subconsciously, as the effects of an absent father in a female’s life are long term and can become detrimental. These issues can affect her future relationships, academic performance and success in the workplace. In today’s American culture there is an increasingly high amount of young female children living in homes affected by a divorce and absentee fathers. Young women who don’t have proper male influences establish improper self-image because “fatherless girls are more prone to sexual promiscuity as they are seeking the approval of men through attempting to seek attention, which leads to a higher rate of teenage pregnancy and more fatherless children being born into society.” (Lewis, Patrice). This creates a viscous cycle, creating a ripple effect that will increase the amount of children suffering by the lack of paternal influence. Consequently, these young women are also developing poor relationship skills and will end up in dysfunctional relationships, careers and suffer academically. Additionally, “the impression that a male figure in a females life during her youth assists these girls in creating healthy non intimate relationships, and due to the lack of this opportunity young women are often struggling with feelings of low self-esteem and unworthiness”.( Capretto, Lisa). Furthermore, the female adolescent of fatherless homes also have suffered a higher rate of suicide and depression, the lack of a positive male influence leaves a void in their lives that is often filled with substance abuse involving drugs and alcohol. The child of a single parent is often made into a friend or surrogate spouse and in the situation between a daughter and father this can create a very dysfunctional outcome with social and emotional setbacks, for “Women who are entangled with their fathers are often unable to enjoy stable partnerships - except with substitutes for fathers or with immature men.
