Would you trade in all of your dreams in order to fight for something you believe in? Pat Tillman was faced with this crossroad after the 9-11 attacks. He would go down as one of the greatest martyrs in modern history. Late George Sakato also went through great lengths to fight for his country when it took up arms in 1941. This call to arms, had inspired many to rethink their life choices, and occupations. In Pat's case this meant walking away from a lucrative 3.6 million dollar contract to join the Army Rangers. The heroic news was the talk of a nation, bringing along countless discussion. Many wondered if he would actually turn down the perks of being a pro football player, in order to risk his life serving his country. Pat went on to leave a glamorous football life in order to join his brother in the war on terrorism. "Sports embodied many of the qualities I deem meaningful," he said in 2002. "However, these last few years, and especially after recent events (911), I've come to appreciate just how shallow and insignificant my role is . . . It's no longer important." Before departure to Afghanistan,Tillman went on to marry his high school sweetheart Marie. A love that would be ended abruptly. On April 2, 2004 Tillman was killed in Eastern Afghanistan.
