In The Great Gatsby, past is a huge theme and contributor to the story. If it weren't for the protagonist’s obsession with the past, the present actions taking place nor the tragic ending would not be the same. In the famous novel, Gatsby is in love with Daisy since 10 years prior to that current time period. He fell in love with her when they were high school sweethearts but didn't end up being with her because of their class differences. It's like the classic love story, where he ends up living his life based on being with his love in the future. He wants to relive his past and recreate it, which changes his whole life.
