Past In The Great Gatsby

In many literature pieces, memories of the past are important as it conveys a character’s inner values and beliefs. A character’s attempt to recapture the past demonstrates his/her emotions as reverence, bitterness, or longing. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the past is closely tied to Jay Gatsby as he longs for the past. The past that Gatsby tries to recapture throughout the novel is tied to his love life with Daisy. Gatsby’s strong desire to reignite the relationship that he once shared with her has started his chase behind the past. Overall, an attempt to recapture the memories and events of the past displays that Gatsby has a strong desire to be a part of the world that he is blocked out of and longs for it. He kept asking for her to go to Tom and say that she never loved him. He can’t see the difference between Daisy that he knew and the Daisy that he is trying to bring the past back with. In the end, Gatsby died of something that Daisy had done, but she didn’t seem too sad about it. He died trying to make the past the future and Nick mentioned that “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter --- to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther…. And one fine morning ------ So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” (Fitzgerald 180). Nick tries to demonstrate from this quote the theme of the significance of the past which Gatsby tried to chase. Nick tries to show the struggle that humans face trying to achieve their goals and dreams. Gatsby thought he could obtain his “American Dream” of being with Daisy, even when he had already achieved the actual dream. He was trying to be part of the world that he is blocked out of, but what he didn’t realize was that he was never part of it and never could be. Hence, Gatsby made a mistake in going after the revised “American Dream,” but as time passes things changed especially Daisy and Gatsby didn’t realize
