The Passover The holiday, Passover, because very important to many Jews and later to Christians, because it is the rememberance of the israelites' freedom from the Egyptians. “Israelites were forced into slavery by the Pharoh and God gave Moses the power to give plagues to convince the Pharoah to free the Israelites. The last plague God sent out to scare the Pharoh enough free the Israelites was that the Angel of Death would kill all of the firstborn children, both livestock and human. In New Testament times Passover was especially popular when Jews felt enslaved by their Roman occupiers. Jesus gave Passover a new meaning. This new meaning wasthat instead of saving God's people from the Egyptians with the Angel of Death, he is saving us from our sins by dying on the cross. Passover was originally celebrated on the month of Nisan (March-April). On the year Jesus died Jews in Palestine observed Passover on a Saturday, while those in dispersion observed on a Binder 3
Friday. Matthew, Mark, and Luke followed the calendar of Diaspora Judaism, whose tradition recalled that the Passover was on a Friday. The year Jesus died, Passover coincided with the Sabbath, so Jesus died on the Sabbath eve according to John. Passover was originally celebrated as two disting festivals. Passover which was a ritual sacrafice of an animal to ward off evil, and The Festival of Unleavened Bread, which celebrated the barley harvest, the first harvest of the year. The Hebrew word for Passover is Pesach. Passover is called easter in some translations of Acts 12:4. As you can see Passover is a very interesting holiday that many people celebrate for two meanings. One being that God saved the Israelites from the Pharoah that enslaved them, and two being that Jesus died on the cross for us to save us for out
