Passover Poem

Decent Essays
Don’t cry
Don’t waste your tears
They take me for a madman
You wouldn’t believe
The famous cruelty
The week of Passover
The shadows beside me
Abandoned streets
I had been afraid
Dead had passed
And unexpectedly
Disappeared
I felt weak
I wanted to run away
An icy wind blew in violent gusts
It was very cold
I ran
The sirens began to wail
I was afraid
Then Terror crazed me
Suddenly
My father woke me up and I told him my interminable nightmare
Don’t worry son
He said I’ll never forget
The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left

As humans, our family and environment at large influence us. Our experiences form the building blocks of who we become, and this is particularly true for artists and poets alike. It is not unusual for artists to draw inspiration from their surroundings be it natural, societal, and even political. One of such artists who in my opinion has been greatly influenced by his surrounding is Li-Young Lee. Born to Chinese parents and witnessing his family sojourn to an "unknown" land (America), Lee 's poetry draws on his memories and stories recounted by family members.…

“ It would be neat, if with the New Year” by Jimmy Baca is a short poem, which holds a deep significance about the past and future, about things that have been parts of our ordinary life. In the poem, the speaker desires a fresh start in his life, but in the end he soon realizes that he can never throw away his past to move on completely. With the skillful uses of symbolism, metaphor, imagery, and narrative poetry, the author successfully leads the mystery and depth of the poem to the readers. To begin with, Baca purposely creates a diversion in the title and the first two sentences to surprise the reader later in the poem. As first, he believes that moving on is the right thing, “It would be neat if with the New Year” (line 1), which shows…

My heart grew heavy at the recollection of the murder of my Annabel, and my heart yearned for her back. Guilt flooded every ounce of blood in my body because I can never forgive myself for what I did to her, for "we loved with a love that was more than love", and never in a million years would I picture myself capable of killing the love of my life. All our life together "she lived with no other thought/ Than to love and be loved by me". I looked out of the little spot of the window that my purple curtains didn't cover right up at the bright, bright moon because "the moon never beams without bringing me dreams/ Of the beautiful Annabel Lee." Staring at the moon only brought me thoughts of an eye, a vulture eye, and this eye brings me to…
