Bel Canto is a novel that is full of passion, spirituality, and love. The world of Bel Canto possesses an entity known as fate; the characters cannot control their own destinies. Patchett wanted her characters to be pulled away from their little bubble; the comfort zone and had them experience and watch their surroundings evolve in a fresh way. Bel Canto takes a 180 throughout the novel, a situation that was once restrictive and chaotic; changes drastically into a more positive setting. Gen uses this opportunity to gain knowledge that he is falling for Carmen, by watching others express love for one another; he truly recognizes what it is like to be in love – developing his emotional status. On an asphalt baseball field in Brooklyn, two teams from local Yeshivah schools meet. At first, it just seems like a baseball game between two Jewish high school teams. But the game quickly turns into a holy war when the caftan and ear lock wearing Hasidic team begins to taunt and bully the less conservative “hell-bound sinners” on the other team. Hate boils as Danny Saunders, the leader of the Hasidic team, purposely hits a pitch right back at the pitcher, crushing his glasses and landing him in the hospital for a week. "I guess you could say we're family." (Barbara Kingsolver, The Bean Trees, page 310) I’ve always said that endings are my favorite parts of stories. They can turn a mediocre or good story into one that leaves you in disarray. I think this quote is the most essential because while it is at the very end of the book, I feel that it is Taylor’s final turning point.…

After reading the text I noticed that in each of the time periods where Charles Wallace goes within another, there is someone whose name is either a form of Charles or Wallace. In this text Charles Wallace, Chuck, Harcels, Reschal, and Llawcae have some very interesting things in common such as maturing and growing within themselves and being. This location known as the star watching rock, time and the Iris Rune seems to appear multiply times throughout the book. In the Harcels, Chuck, and Matthew storylines it seems like a lot of time passes quickly from Charles Wallace's point of view but forever to whomever he is within. Charles Wallace in the beginning suffers from overconfidence in his own abilities and a tendency to try to take things into his own hands.…

Haemon, to start off, is a character I would eliminate from the story because if you take him out then Eurydice would not have killed herself. The Messenger says to Creon “then with her dying breath she called down torments on your head- you killed her son.” The only person he affects is an insignificant character to play but also because of Haemon the wife died and Creon is in grief. Creon then realizes his error in his poor judgment towards Antigone but then he realizes it's too late because he lost Haemon and Eurydice.…
