When I was younger, people always asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I used to say things like a doctor, a lawyer, mainly the “big time” jobs that I saw when I watched television, However, I have always been fascinated by the medical field and all of its entirety. There are many different people and paths that can be taken upon in the medical field. There are physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners, and many more. Working in the medical field was my dream since I was a little girl. My desire grew when I took anatomy my junior year. My anatomy class educated me on how complex the human body is; from each cell to the organ system, they worked together to form one complex organism. At first, I was contemplating what area of the medical field I wanted to pursue; then, my anatomy class went to an open-heart surgery, where we witnessed a live surgery at Advocate Christ Hospital. This surgery demonstrated the significance of each person in the operating room: from the surgeon to the nurse.…

This passion resulted in an abundance of awards including 22 honorary degrees for my work, medals from NASA for Exceptional Scientific Achievement and the Nasa Apollo Achievement Award, the Public Welfare Medal (the highest award of the National Academy of Sciences), along with many others that I can't remember off the top of my head. When thinking about it now, I lived my life the way many wish they could live theirs: absolutely loving their job. One time I was invited to be a guest on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. When I was a child when someone asked me, "What are you going to be when you grow up?" My answer was always, "I am going to be a nurse. " When I attended college the first time, my answer became, "I 'm not sure what I want to be."
