I also have passion and persistence for health care, and empathy for patients. My passion for health care always leads me to the health column of the newspaper. I like to read it because of the insight it brings into my life. I read and research about new findings in the health world. For example, Drosophila melanogaster mth mutants have an extension of lifespan. Many headlines are some extra information on new findings and researching on an animal or a plant and possibility of cures in them. Cutting precisely on the lines, making sure I didn’t stray and accidently cut out part of an article, I carefully extracted the Sudoku puzzle from the daily newspaper before my father came to the breakfast table to read it. Then, working as fast as I could, I began deciphering the puzzle, eliminating numbers I knew didn’t belong in a certain box and writing, in tiny print, all the numbers that could potentially fit. Gradually, as the pieces came together, the completed puzzle unfolded. I glanced at the clock, scarfed down my cereal (which had gone soggy), and raced out the door just in time to catch the bus. During my hour long bus ride to school I would reflect on how I had solved the puzzle, wondering if there was a better way to approach…

On the internet, there is a "meme" called the Asian grading system. Though amusing, it reveals some of the pressures that Asian Americans often face growing up with overbearing parents. Students without parents to push them struggle to catch up in the competitiveness environment that exists in high schools across America. I'm a victim of the race to perfection, academic excellence and the pressures of failure and shortcomings. I'm not the only one and I won't be the last.…

I think I fell in love with the idea of a career in public health before I ever even knew what public health was. Upon entering my undergraduate career, I had a profound passion for the medical field and had hopes of pursuing a medical degree. I was continuously fascinated by the applications of mathematics to biology and moreover their translation to medicine. I fell in love with the idea of modeling biological phenomenon and understanding the dynamic systems this entails.…

I was unfamiliar with the process of choosing the order of courses that would transition me to graduation. As a result, I took several non-required courses, and I even took some of the needed courses, for my degree, out of order. Needless to say, I hit an academic wall that lasted five long semesters. It would have been easier for me to change majors for the sake of graduation, but being in such a predicament only sharpened my perseverance and molded my determination. While these academic complications seemed unbearable at the time, my senior year turned out to be my most challenging year.…
