Passerby Persuasive Speech

Decent Essays
Perhaps you've read about the weathered tombstone in an old cemetery in Indiana that bears this epitaph:

Pause, stranger, when you pass me by; As you are now, so once was I, As I am now, so you will be, So prepare for death and follow me.

An unknown passerby read those words and etched this reply below them:

To follow you I'm not content, Until I know which way you went.

That passerby was right on. The most important thing to know about dying is “What follows death?”; Or to be more specific, “Where are you going?”; As we have seen, the Bible teaches that physical death means separation. But separation to what—or where? Where does the departed spirit of man go? The answer is very simple: to one of two eternal destinations.

Matthew 7:13,14 Every day God's salvation draws nearer, which means we must be more diligent and persevering in our walk with the Him. Think back to the last time you went out with friends and family, and had a hard time being able to follow all of the conversations over the noise of the restaurant or other diners’ conversations? You probably had to really strain to be able to hear what everyone else was saying and keep your concentration on this above all else. You may not even have contributed much to it because you were either trying so hard to figure out what’s being said or were so focused on it that you didn’t really get a chance to think about what you’d contribute to the conversation. This may be such a problem for you, that you’ve stopped going out or talking on the phone because you just don’t want to be embarrassed by not being able to follow the conversation completely. I was born to a Hindu family – and therefore, I call myself a Hindu, based on the cultural exposures that I have had through my family and my religious community. And yet Hinduism for me is like a foundation, one on which I have built my own perceptions of God and religion, based on my own life experiences. My particular views may therefore seem unique at best, blasphemous at worst – but they will have a great impact on how I act as a patient, and as a physician. Like many Hindus, I believe in reincarnation. Traditionally, reincarnation means that after death, souls are reborn many times to repay their debts, to right their wrongs, and to rid themselves of their past karmas, or deeds, until they are ready to become one with God.…
