Passchendaele Movie Analysis

Passchendaele is a Canadian war film portraying the life from the perspective of a soldier. Sergeant Michael Dunne was in the Battle of Vimy Ridge, where he was wounded and sent home as a neurasthenia patient. While being treated, he falls in love with his nurse, Sarah Mann. David Mann, Sarah’s younger brother, decided to ask his girlfriend, Cassie Walker, father’s permission to marry her, but gets rejected in front of a crowd as he is not in the military. He is told that he must be enlisted to be approved to be with Cassie. Although David suffers from asthma, he still attempts to get enlisted but is denied by Michael as Sarah told him that she does not want him to join the military. Later on, David gets enlisted and lies to Sarah that Michael is the reason he got enlisted when a British recruiting officer enlisted him. Passchendaele showed a wide range of emotions such as anxiety, love, bravery, and many more. This is shown through the shell-shocks, the relationship between Michael and Sarah, and David wanting to enlist in the military. I feel that this movie makes people become more aware about how tough it was for soldiers to risk their lives and leave their families only to be put into harsh living conditions. This movie questioned me how nations can go to war with each other for a long period of time and ignore the fact that thousands of lives are being lost. How did people find it so easy to pick up a gun and shoot someone? It was depressing to see. Although there were negative outcomes to having war, it also benefited countries in the creation of new jobs and the advancement of technology and weaponry. In my opinion, I believe everyone is able to learn from this movie that violence may seem like the best solution to go, but can cost something money cannot
