Based on the two articles by Marzano that were assigned to read and this week’s content on adaptations for ELLs, in a word-processed document, write a summary of the significant elements of Practice, Homework and Identifying Similarities and Differences integrating concrete examples and/or non-examples from your teaching practice. Homework and practice go hand to hand when students are learning on their own and applying new concepts. As mentioned and described by Marzano, and according to the information provided in the two articles homework and practice are fundamental practices to enhance student achievement. Here teachers should have students explain how they were able to identify those examples step by step. Asking and answering questions will enhance this practice. For example, having students explain how they found the right answer, or what would happen if they’d done something different, are great ways of challenging students as they elaborate their thought processes.
Practice involves students being engaged in applying new learning. Marzano describes the importance of allowing students to begin practicing new concepts often enough in sessions closely together but then gradually increase the intervals of time between practices.
In regards to homework, it is mentioned how homework should not only be seen as an afterschool activity but more as an opportunity for students to increase the level of understanding in a particular subject. When providing homework to ELL students, teacher should keep in mind to accommodate our students. For example, something that I do in my class to facilitate and enrich this process.is to provide extra time or rewording the instructions of certain assignments when students have to complete them at home. Comparing can be defined as the process of identifying similarities and differences between certain things or ideas. Classifying can be understood as the process of grouping things or ideas that are alike into categories. Creating metaphors will involve identifying a specific pattern that connects information that is not literally evident, while analogies focuses on the relationship between two sets of items and their similarities and differences between relationships.
When working with ELL students, teachers should keep into consideration the support and guidance needed to have students succeed. For instance, modeling and beginning with familiar topics will facilitate students’ engagement and understanding. For example, modeling how to use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast different animals can help young students develop higher thinking skills when they are still in the initial stages.
In summary, Marzano’s instructional strategies have been proven to effect student achievement. Practice, homework, and identifying similarities and differences strategies that can be implemented to empower educators as they focus together on improving student
