Pass Fail Grading Policy Analysis

Improved Essays
I am writing to inform you about administration’s proposition to change grading policies for major level courses and the turmoil it has created amongst students. A change this substantial will greatly affect students going forward, and the pros/cons should be weighed out effectively before moving forward. In my opinion, a pass/fail grading policy would be very beneficial. The pressure to perform well in classes is sometimes unbearable, especially for those in majors that want to pursue a higher education after achieving their Bachelor Degree. In accounting specifically, the intense recruiting process puts heavy emphasis put on your “Accounting GPA.” I can speak for myself and my peers when I say the pressure to get an A in a class it too high.

Classifying organizes William Zinsser’s essay into an easily digestible mind map. To further strengthen his arguments, he defines each pressure with an example, and then proves its existence by finding the cause. Furthermore, he predicts how college pressures can lead to worse problems. Whether or not the pressures exist, William Zinsser’s essay will convince more parents, professors, and college administrators to fix these problems, or at least acknowledge it. In the worse case, they will at least respect his position on student…

There is no question that the American education system is flawed and is not the most effective to teach students a broad range of academic subjects. Students are graded on the ability to reproduce knowledge onto a piece of paper after days, weeks, or months of studying a topic. The lack of this ability results in failure to earn a passing grade in the subject matter. If the student can reproduce the desired knowledge at a highly proficient rate, they receive a rating that distinguishes them from other students. In “A Young Person’s Guide to the Grading System,” an article written by Jerry Farber, a professor of English at the University of California at San Diego, the grading system is put at fault for the flawed educational system.…

In the novel, Overachievers: The Secret Lives of Driven Kids, author, Alexandra Robbins, argues that it is not good for the students to be under an extreme amount of pressure in school and I certainly agree with this statement. Parents are often the ones who place an excessive amount of pressure on their children to succeed, even starting before they are born. This pressure that parents place on their children can lead to immoral behavior, such as cheating. The overachieving students may come across as perfect on the outside, but by having so much pressure placed on them to be perfect, they may get into a mindset where they focus too much on comparing their standardized test scores and GPAs with other students’, causing them to be left feeling…

At the end of the course I had received a pass and I was happy about that. A pass/fail system eliminates the need for a GPA which, in my opinion, would cause less stress, anxiety, and cheating from scared students. In the end, what I think really matters is understanding what you are supposed to be studying and learning. If you are able to apply what you’ve learned to your life or work, then you have succeeded.…

A Lazy A Suzanne E. Fry writes “Some students feel that success is owed to them; after all, they did not spend thousand of dollars a year not to yield results”(Fry 10). In her article, she brings out her view that relaxing grades or the lower performance needed to achieve good grades, cause the quality of education to suffer and teaches student they don 't need to work hard to succeed are completely valid; it is seen in the way student pick classes today and their time spent studying. Suzanne E. Fry in the article, Grade Inflation argues that the inflation of grades going on in higher education is harmful to all involved. Fry points out that when A’s are easier to achieve students are taught that they don 't need to work hard. She shows that…

Has anyone thought of school and been like “Hmm, professors might give them a better grade if they complain to her about how they feel they did a better job at that assignment?” Or how about, “Wow there is so much free time from studying that they should just all go get drunk?” Says no student ever. But truthfully after reading “Grade Inflation Gone Wild” by Stuart Rojstaczer and “Doesn’t Anyone Get a C Anymore” by Phil Primack that is apparently the mentality that some people involved in school system has adapted, students and professors; which will be discussed in this essay. Whoever heard of grade inflation?…

“What I wish for all students is some release from the clammy grip of the future. I wish them a chance to savor each segment of their education as an experience in itself and not as a grim preparation for the next step.” This quote blatantly shows how the author of this article wants to help college students. This information must be told because someone with experience needs to keep college students from cracking under the pressure. “I see four kinds of pressure working on college students today: economic pressure, parental pressure, peer pressure, and self-induced pressure.…

William Zinsser says that his “students think that every other student is working harder and doing better, so the only solution is to study harder still” (4). In other words, Zinsser says that students think that their peers are doing better than themselves. I can’t say that I haven’t felt the same way before. There are times when I feel pressured by others. For instance, my roommate who is in the same economics class as me, studies and reads more than me, which would make me feel that I should work harder than he does.…

    The Absurd Policy

The Absurd Policy Like many other colleges, Austin Community College has reasonable rules, policies, and procedures which students and faculty must abide by. However there is one policy I feel should be completely revised or discarded. ACC requires students who did not score high enough on the Mathematics and English sections of the SAT or TAKS test to either enroll in a remedial course or to take the TSI placement exam and test into a college-level course. The issue that concerns me is there are students who have credibility from their high school career, such as high GPAs and advanced course credits that proves they have the ability to learn and do well in college-level courses.…

Do you believe it is fair for someone who doesn’t try, doesn’t care, and doesn’t want to push themselves to excel academically to be accepted into a college or honors program, or be awarded a scholarship over you, just because their GPA was higher? It isn’t fair, but it happens anyway. Every year students chances of scholarships are obstructed by other individuals, not intentionally, but because their cumulative grade point average is higher than their peers only due to the fact that the courses that student takes aren’t advanced preparatory, dual credit, or honors. The absence of weighted classes in California High School can potentially detrimentally affect the majority of the student population; regardless, a simple fix to this ever-growing issue is to begin weighting the courses that are more arduous, strenuous, and challenging. This is and will continue to be a…

An unweighted grading system is a standard concept where the average of all class grades is based on a 4.0 scale (“Weighted”). No matter the difficulty of courses one takes, he cannot exceed a 4.0 GPA; all A’s are worth 4.0 points, and each letter grade decreases by one point to an F amounting to zero. The unweighted system focuses more on grades and not the difficulty or effort of students work (Lindsay). A weighted system is generally based on a 5.0 scale. However, not every class is worth 5.0 points; only college, honors, and advanced placement (AP) courses are eligible for additional GPA, adding one point to every grade received for the more complex material (Grove).…
