Dr. Jim Yong Kim was a respected individual in global health, before his presidency at the World Bank. When he was younger, his mother forced him to watch current events around the world. This forced him to understand issues around the world and inspired him to become a doctor. He was one of the co-founders of Partners in Health with Dr. Paul Farmer, Ophelia Dahl and other advocates for universal global health. Partners in Health (PIH) was an organization that provided for the poor to have access to medical services. Kim created a system of community health workers in Carabayllo, called Socios en Salud (Kidder, 2009). He also served as a director of HIV/AIDS department of World Health Organization (WHO).
