Particles in the Mist
In this project, there was a cloud chamber built to see radioactive decay particles with a radioactive source. In this project an ionizing smoke detector is being used as the radioactive source. The difference between an ionizing smoke detector and one that is not is that they tend to respond 30-90secs faster to fast flame fires than photoelectric fire alarms. . A cloud chamber is a sealed environment containing supersaturated vapor of water or alcohol. Supersaturated water vapor is a vapor ready to condensate, but lacking nuclei on which to condense. In this project 91% isopropyl alcohol is being used. When decay particles travel through the chamber,

The definition of an accelerant is a substance that accelerates the speed of fire or makes a fire more intense (Accelerant | Define Accelerant at Dictionary.com, n.d.). When forensic laboratories have debris that was collected from a crime scene they can use either the Headspace or the Vapor Concentration techniques to determine if there was an accelerant used. Both techniques use Gas Chromatography, which is separating mixtures based on their distribution between a stationary liquid phase and moving gas phase (Saferstein, 2011). The Headspace Technique was developed in the 1980’s to aid in explaining the odor compounds found in the air surrounding objects such as plants, flowers and food (Headspace technology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, n.d.) Headspace analysis is the investigation of the components present in the gas, which is found at the top of the vial (Labhut Education Centre | Principles of GC Headspace Analysis, n.d.).…

For the creative response to House of Sand and Fog (2003), I have created a dance video that portrays and explores the theme of appearance and reality. One of the prominent characters in House of Sand and Fog is Behrani. Behrani, an Iranian immigrant is shown to be living a façade, which leads to the theme of appearance and reality. I was inspired to create this video with two different worlds that represents an appearance, and a reality. This concept was inspired by Behrani who seems to have put on this appearance in order to enhance his daughters chances of making a good marriage.…

In this lab, we tested different experiments on a candle flame in order to better understand properties, combustion, and states of matter. We recorded many observations that could help us reach a conclusion using what we saw happen. When we observed the regular candle flame, we concluded that the heat of the flame vaporizes the liquid wax. Then, we blew this candle out and took a different lit candle into the smoke trail from the burnt out candle. The wax vapor in the smoke is combustible, therefore when introduced to flame, the vapor is burned and it relights the first candle in a fast process.…

Although this system seems unmanageable back in 1871 it was considered very efficient, helpful, and fast. Although on the night the Great Chicago Fire broke out the fireman on watch dismissed the smoke as just smoldering embers from the previous night fire. Because fires were so common during that time the citizens of Chicago also dismissed the glowing fire and alarms as nothing important. “For days past alam has followed alarm, but the comparatively trifling losses have familiarized us to the pealing of the Courthouse bell, and we [have] forgotten that absence of rain for weeks [has] left everything in so dry and inflammable conditions…

This decay can be divided into 3 major different types of decay- alpha decay, beta decay, and gamma decay. Alpha decay is one method that unstable atoms will use to become additional stable. Throughout radioactive decay, an atom's nucleus sheds 2 protons And 2 neutrons during a packet that scientists decision an particle. Since AN atom loses 2 protons throughout radioactive decay, it changes from one part to a different. as an example, when undergoing radioactive decay, an atom of atomic number 92 (with 92 protons) becomes an atom with an atomic number of 90 (with 90 protons). In physical science, disintegration is a sort of nuclear reaction within which a nucleon is reworked into a nucleon, or contrariwise, within AN atomic nucleus.…

During the winter months, there are many different areas where fog occurs in the United States. States in the west, like California, Oregon, and Washington, it is not uncommon for there to be several consecutive days of fog that form overnight and disappear in the mid-morning or early afternoon. Places along the Pacific Coast such as Morro Bay, California and San Francisco, California tend to see a considerable amount of fog that travels over the water and move inland. On the East Coast, there is not as much widespread fog, but rather it is concentrated north in the state of Maine (Fog in the United States). Maine averages 3,000 hours of fog per year in Moose Peak and Nantucket Island.…

Helping people doesn't bring justice at all the time. Most people like to help each other, especially when they believe these people are really in need of that help since they have unfair situations. In the novel, the house of sand and fog, it is obvious that Lester is typically a pipeline over providing justice. Since he feels responsible for Kathy’s situation, he tries to help her in order to provide justice and prove his manhood, “Lester began to feel as inauthentic a man as was possible, living in a marriage he no longer felt, working as a law enforcer when he’d never been able to face any man down on his own, to serve or protect anyone without the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department behind him” (Dubus III, page 240).…

Thesis: Our energy comes predominantly from fossil fuels because of it’s supposed inexpensiveness. However, the cost of fossil fuels in terms of human lives is often ignored. Nuclear power, on the other hand, is a much safer alternative because it results in fewer deaths per unit of energy produced than coal and natural gas. By comparing their outputs in terms of energy produced per unit of fuel consumed, and comparing that with the amount of byproducts produced as well as the amount of deaths associated with both energy sources we can analyse their relative harmfulness.…

Filtration depends on solubility, the filtrate is the one want to keep (liquid) and the residue on the filter paper is the solid (we may or may not want to keep depending on the experiment).…
