An award that is given to people for the sole reason of participating in the activity. This is a general definition of what “we” see as participation trophies today. During this new generation parents and doctors have become so worried about the self-esteem of children that they have started to award more "participation trophies.” When coaches and parents are awarding these participation trophies it is with 100 percent good intentions but their effects might not be so positive. When giving children participation trophies for everything they do, it prevents them from facing the fact that loss is a part of life, it results in them being less gratified when they win, and it causes them to underestimate the expectations of others.

The fact that children decide when they should get awarded and not knowing how to handle the situation that arises when they don’t win is not okay. Children need to realize that when you lose it is normally because you did not give it your all or that there is still room to improve, it can be a learning experience. This can make you a better athlete, employee, supervisor, or even an owner of a company.
In May 2013, a Time magazine cover story identified Millennials as those born from 1980 or 1981 to 2000. In 2014, the Pew Research Center, an American think tank organization, defined "adult Millennials" as those who were 18 to 33 years old, born 1981–1996. (Bump) This is the generation of people who have been more affected by the increase in rewarding these “participation trophies.“Millennials got so many participation trophies growing up that a recent study that showed that 40% believe they should be promoted every two years, regardless of performance.”
