Many successful organizations and corporations have utilized the functional skill of empowerment, by having their leaders bring their employees together and aligning them with common visions and goals, thereby enjoying a collective success, because jobs are sustained, and so are the employees and to some, even enjoy the added benefits of bonuses and other perks.

Similarly, this crucial functional tool works tremendously for individual and communities as well, and an important function for any human services worker. Dealing with people can be laborious and daunting at times, as people are different, some are self motivators or get goers, while others would need to be guided and empowered, and this is where the skillful human service worker comes in.

It involves digging deeper into the participants to unveil his/her weaknesses and strengths, unearth their vision or goals, and assist them come up with a plan of action to achieve those desired goals, and how to articulate them. It also greatly involves challenging the participant to take and accept personal responsibilities for their actions, decisions and choices. It is simply letting the participant acknowledge the cause and effects, that every action or inaction have consequences, and so their personal involvement in control of their lives must be called in or empowered, while the skilled human service worker guides them through. From my internship experience, I have learned that, participants can begin to empower themselves by seeking opportunities to learn and increase their knowledge and understanding of the communities where they reside through community resource centers such as Plumley Village and the libraries.
