Participant 001 Case Study

In his interview, participant 001, an art major male Latino student described how he had to learn to navigate higher education as a student who was lacked academic preparation. Commuting to school everyday with the help of public transportation for a total of 6 hours per day, the student developed particular skills that help in the context of gaining the academic preparation he sought after. Despite the potential risks in revealing their status, students were able to skillfully develop an intuition about to whom, when, and where it would be appropriate to share this information. As participant 001 explained,

“Problems with scheduling, not having my own computer. Having to use a computer at my department. Having to commute not living close to campus schedules conflict that will result in not finishing my assignments on

(D. Solórzano, 2002) mentions in his readings the framework that analyzes the educational inequities and barriers for Latino college students - A concept that can help us further understand the concepts of education and support.

In his interview, participant 001, an art major male minority student described how has been categorized on campus by students and staff due to his image. The student at times is questions on his attendance in campus. Despite these challenges and the alienation from students and staff, participant 001 has had the resilience in overcoming this form of micro- aggression by being respectful, participant 001 explained,

“Some have been nice, some students have been or have judge you on your mistakes they make you feel unwelcome. Because of my image because the way that I dress some people talk to me others don’t talk to me in class. No; more professor even if initially. I am always respectful and polite even they have been disrespected
