His first friend is Gordy. When Junior first met Gordy he was in class and the teacher was trying to embarrass him even though his answer was right, the teacher tried making fun of him and asked Gordy for reassurance, but then Gordy sided with Junior and proved the teacher wrong. When Junior asks Gordy to be his friend Gordy sort of backs off and says,” I assure you, I am not a homosexual,” but he reassures Gordy that is not his intention, and that they have a lot in common. Gordy is a nerd, but he is also a genius in his class, that makes him an outsider. Gordy helps Junior with his studying, as well as going all the way to teaching him how to read. Penelope is junior’s friend, even though at first she mocks him by calling him,” the boy who can’t figure out his own name.” Throughout the book you find out how much closer Penelope and junior become. When you think about it Penelope and Arnold each have a whole lot in common, for example; they are dreamers, they both want to see him world, and they each would like to escape the small dreams that reside in their lives. Penelope states,” I hate this little town. It’s so small, too small. Everything about it is small. The people here have small ideas. Small dreams. They all want to marry each other and live here forever.”(Page 111) When he sees Penelope for the first time, he is fascinated about this pretty and shockingly knowledgeable white girl. Penelope one day was in the girls bathroom and Arnold walked by and he heard what sounded out like vomiting so he called out and she tried making him go away but, he refused, which also led into her crying and blurting out how awful she felt about herself, and sooner or later they became the hot topic around the school. Both of them have their own problems, but they try to help the other by his/her problems, throughout the book. Penelope’s father is also racist which makes being friends and dating Junior extremely difficult but, both don’t regret that they had become a couple, but they think, for the future it’s easier to be just friends. Besides Penelope’s father Earl hates Indians, so he hates Junior.
