There was substantially more research on the benefits of work for individuals with chronic illness as well as return to work programs ideas than I had originally anticipated. The research I gathered to justify this service proposal reflected my own values that work is beneficial for the health of those with chronic illness and it is a realistic achievable result for many individuals. Further to this it demonstrated that my view that work has a considerable impact on an individual’s identity is correct, further strengthening my theory for my master’s thesis on changes in identity in people with chronic illness. Accordingly, I also developed greater awareness of the needs of a suitable and supportive workplace is dependent on the individual and their illness. The study by Detaille, Haafkens and Van Dijk (2003) highlighted this by finding that common factors needed to cope with work were identified among the research group but were given different levels of importance by the illness groups. I learnt that a multidiscipline team approach is most effective, when we’re collaborating with other health professionals we are allowing for the rehabilitation of the individual as a whole.
