Part 4: Setting/Atmosphere The setting of the story is a couple miles away from Cincinatti, OH. In this story, it is in a forest in that area. There in the forest was a cabin which is where Murlock lived. And I am going to have to say or guess that the cabin was way out of the suburbs where there was a lot of land. So they might have been in the country. For where Murlock?s cabin is, it would be symbolic to say that based on that, he would probably be into the outdoors. His wife getting dragged toward the house is symbolic because she is still alive after getting attacked by the panther. Also, everything that happens in the story is during the year of 1830. Well, whenever you first hear the title of the story, you might have no clue what it is going to be about, or you might think that the story could be about something to do with just a window. Well here is some things about the mood and stuff. At the beginning, everything is easy going actually with Murlock?s easy going life. He has a wife too. In the story, there was a boarded up window like the title. When Murlock was young, he built his own log cabin. The log cabin had 1 door. When Murlock was young, as the story says, he had a lot of hope in his life and he was strong. At the time, he began to work on a farm. To show how Murlock was, he was brave because he had a rifle that he used to keep himself fed. So based on how he was, he had a pretty good way of life. So then he probably knew the outdoors pretty well, like for how to deal with animals, especially for him to know how to eat the animals. He and his wife loved each other. They were always happy. But in the story, it said that one day, Murlock was dead in his cabin. But he died of natural causes. His wife, it says had a fever and died, but really she didn?t. But Murlock still thought she did die. So for the mood, at this time after he thinks she died, he gets really depressed and sad. But she might not have because when she got attacked by the panther, a piece of the animals ear was in her teeth, which leads to the possibility of the attack, which
