Political Activity Experienced in My Churches Growing up, my family attended multiple churches of different denominations. My father was raised Catholic and my mother was a Lutheran. They dated for a bit in high school but neither was willing to give up their family’s religious tradition so they quickly broke up. Then, a few years after college, my parents were reunited and decided to find a church they both could support. The first church I remember attending was a Christian and Missionary Alliance church. After a few years in this congregation, my parents agreed to help start a non-denominational church. For my elementary years, my family was actively involved with this small congregation. Then, in middle school, my family moved to Arizona when my dad took a position at an Assembly of God megachurch. But this experience was short lived and we returned to Minnesota in less than a year. Since moving back, my family has attended an Evangelical Free church in St. Cloud called Westwood Community church. Now, almost ten years later, my entire family is connected at

He tried to express his concerns for the church, but after he spoke up, they asked him to resign. One of my dad’s biggest complaints was that the church was more concerned about their image and “putting on a show” than on the spiritual state of their congregation. Basically, everything this church did was extravagant and over the top, even their political involvement, since it was all about looks and being entertaining. When this church took a stance politically, they made it a big deal of it to convince their members why this stance was the right decision. The congregation was swayed by the wonderful production and would pretty much follow anything the pastor said without

The author thesis is breaking down the number of participants in church in the beginning of Religious organizations in America. Although, certain information was documented pertaining to the participation of church attendance. Information gathered from the text explains that there is additional text that provides proof of the rise in attendance for modern day churches. The text stated that "The backbone of this book consists of our attempt to explore and explain how and why America shifted from a nation in which most people took no part in organized religion to a nation in which nearly two-thirds of American adults do (Finke and Stark 1). " Explaining why more people are leaning to attending church, or the reason certain religions had more attendance than others are also explained in the text.…

My family moved to Meridian, MS from California when I was around six or seven years old. Since then, all the way up to the ninth grade, my mother took my sister and me to Saint James A.M.E. Church for Sunday services. One Sunday, a cousin of mine brought me along to the service of her new church, and ever since then I have been attending New Freedom Tabernacle. I have found that NFT has certain qualities about it that have always attracted my attention in ways that St. James could not; so, I became an official member of NFT within a few months of the switch. St. James and NFT are two very separate, distinct churches in a multitude of ways, yet they also carry certain traits that make them very similar.…

In a nation that pledges allegiance to itself under god, religion is bound to become a factor in the politics that govern it. Religion did not start to be integrated into public affairs until the mid 1980s. It was at this time that abortion and other personal issues began to emerge into the political spectrum. By incorporating aspects of the moral being into government decisions, coalitions were formed to unite for certain issues. Due to the increased combination of religion and partisanship, the ideologies of religious politics and political religion became more prominent, as can be seen in the case of abortion described in American Grace: How Religion Divides and Unites Us.…

Growing up, my family and I weren’t very religious by any means. My parents grew up in Catholic families, but when they moved away from their families, they moved away from God too. Every time we were stationed in a new place, my parents always blamed not going to church on the military and how we would always be moving. My sister and I didn’t mind this, because we didn’t really know what church was, and didn’t understand the meaning of it, but when we moved to Louisiana in 2012, I met a friend that would change this. I met this girl Samantha, who seemed to be in a few of my classes.…

Socially conservative views often characterize the religious right, “a coalition of conservative Protestant Christians” who often “use the language of faith and quasi-religious organizations to affect the political process” The religious right had a profound effect on politics of the 1980s. Thousands were mobilized to vote and their effect was so strong that in a sense the religious right became its own voting bloc. Jimmy Carter was one of the first presidents to feel the influence of the religious right; however, the religious right had a very distinct and lasting effect as a result of Ronald Reagan’s presidency while Bill Clinton often suffered incessant backlash during his presidency.…

It’s very strange how one experience or choice you make in your life can change the rest of your life that follows that event, would you then in turn change these decisions you made. Such as your what if your mom conceived you not on the knowing basis. What if everyone was telling her not to because she was to be a single mom and that’s not a world a child should be born into, but then what if she challenged this belief that she grew up with. This then in turn affected all her choices later in life, but then vice versa what if she didn't challenge this belief and stuck with what she knew. This may be of the more extreme choices in life that some people must make but we all have that certain time in our life that comes where we must break away and make…

I am half white and half Hispanic; light skinned with brown eyes and dark hair. This disparity is exacerbated by my very Hispanic name, Reyes Lucero, and my very “white” upbringing. My family didn’t make beans and enchiladas for dinner; they made tofu stir-fry. As a result, it was difficult to connect with people, I was too different. People assume from my name that I come from a very traditional New Mexican family, but my parents are anything but traditional.…

Everyone has morals and beliefs that set a baseline for what they value. Values vary between individuals, but for many, religion is the root from where these values stem from. While it is good to morally question, today personal religious affiliation is increasing in collective matters and actions, expressed in politics, protests, and biased beliefs. It’s important to note that religion and politics are two different domains that should not intermingle, as religion is a personal ideology while politics embody a rational, collective process. Good politics are policy oriented and not concerned with external factors related to politicians and their personal lives.…

My spiritual journey of faith has turned me into more of a “mutt” than a “purebred” Christian because of the variety of denominations and international churches that I have experienced so far in my life. For starters, I grew up in a “every Sunday” church family. In fact, I was at church the very next Sunday after being born. My first church was part of the Assemblies of God. However, a few years later my parents divorced and we ended up at a non-denomination church, where I spent the next 20 years.…
