I cannot think of a time when I felt more alive than my thirteen week vacation on Parris Island.

For those that do not know, Parris Island is a small island on the coast of South Carolina where the government makes United States Marines. I said “vacation”, but this thirteen weeks was anything but. The obstacles began when I arrived in the middle of the night and a Drill Instructor entered the bus and “welcomed” everyone to the island. There were physical obstacles such as fifteen mile forced marches, as well as emotional obstacles,

Whenever we live as normal human beings, we tend to set goals and accomplishments that we want to accomplish one day. We plan out a perfect and hardship free journey to get us right in front of our goal or accomplishment. Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world. In any type of journey, we will encounter a certain type of adversity that will try to get us off track and give up on our goals or dreams. As I think about what Horace stated and refer to my thinking, I come to agree with Horace’s statement: “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.”…

In the beginning of each episode they have brief interviews with the surviving members of the marines and they discuss what will be shown in each episode with maps, images, and videos. This really helps create a setting for the show and it also gives you a little background information they can’t explain while they are showing the actors portraying the characters. This television series helped me understand WWII better on the Pacific Theater because that was its main focus. I feel like I really got a better understanding of how emotionally draining fighting in a war is because looking at those soldiers they really couldn’t give up no matter what happened they felt like the needed to help but, at the same time they just wanted to leave. I also learned that the battle of Peleliu was pretty much disregarded and forgotten about even though a lot of men had suffered and it had the most deaths in U.S. history.…

Three obstacles I have had to overcome include me being Caribbean-American, a woman, and of the LGBT+ community. Being a first generation Caribbean-American allows me to overcome many challenges because my parents are both immigrants who came to America to receive a better life not only for themselves, but for me and my sister as well. Being a woman is very hard in America being that we are payed less than men and we have been oppressed periodically throughout history and it is just finally starting to change. Lastly I am a part of the LGBT+ which is a huge complication in its own, because many people think that the community just wanted Same-sex couples to be able to be married, but in so many states many people are discriminated for being…

Life can often be thought of as a series of forks in the road, ever changing by the decisions we make. The decision to leave the United States Marine Corps was only bigger than the decision to join in the first place. I decided to leave the Marine Corps, first because of the inability of my senior leadership to follow laws, second because of the lack of leadership in my unit, and third because I simply wasn’t serving my country. Although leaving the corps was a difficult decision these reasons helped me to clarify and decide in the way that I did.…

Many people have faith that life is a learning rite of passage. Not only does it show that even within traditions, it is acceptable to break free and explore, but to also stay put and observe its greatness. Sometimes to rush after your future, you have to stop running and plant yourself in one place.
