At the words, the music resounding in the ballroom decelerated in energy until it came to a complete halt; the ball-goers, dressed in vivid shades of purple and blue, were forced to stay rooted in their current positions.

An unexpected giggle left my lips at the sight of a few comical poses. Though, the other poses fell short to the one that the herald flaunted; at the brink of yawning, his expression was that of an unintended scowl, with one eye at the verge of blinking and the other wide open; add on to the fact that his face was flushed as that of a ripe tomato.

The room itself was grand and ancient, with walls of rough hewn stone, polished granite floors, and a ceiling as high as ten men. There were eight long tables, the shortest on a raised dais along the far wall, and seven more set orthogonal to the first and extending to the entry. Sheaves of wheat and sprays of spring blooms adorned the walls, and cornucopias spilled fruits, nuts and candies onto each table. There were dancers, at least a dozen of them, draped loosely in silks of gold and rich green, ribbons of fabric that swayed as they swayed, dipped as they dipped, and fluttered about them as they spun. Along walls and in corners, on tables and among revelers, they danced in time to a rhythmic tune—singly and in pairs and trios, all moving with an agile grace, seducing guests with limber acrobatics and inviting smiles.…

In the middle of my sophomore year, I was asked by a senior if I would like to be the president of a dance club they had started that year. The club members knew that I was apart of a well known dance studio. I was indecisive primarily because the club only had 3 members and so I did not know how I could make it into something starting off alone and young, but something told me to just go for it. And that I did.…

I usually find satisfaction when an example of comedic wit comes to light. The art of sarcasm, and the structure of satire have never ceased to amuse me. Although, when this specific brand of “humor” comes about, I sit back not to marvel at the thought or eloquence of the speech, but to restrain my own deeply rooted antipathy. When these graceless, crude masses shove their way into conversation, I watch in disdain as they merely beg for the attention of their audience. My muscles tense and cringe while my fingers curl reflecting my desire to retreat from an area so comically contaminated.…

To the ones who believe asking, “What are you?” is a valid conversation starter, I am multiracial and proud, but to simplify my ethnicities to others when asked, I identify myself as Asian. I was stereotyped because of how we are perceived in media and society. I spent years cowering in my own skin because others made me believe I was not Asian because of the size of my eyes, the color of my hair, and my personal interests. I was ashamed of what I looked like since I was convinced it embodied who I am as a person.…

Growing up in New York City in the late 1990s wasn’t easy. In the midst of risks, such as gang violence and racism, growing up in an immigrant family was a never-ending journey of developing resilience against constant adversities. Growing up in two distinct cultural settings that emphasizes contrasting values, traditional conformity versus individualistic freedom, made you question how you defined yourself, in terms of not only cultural identity, but also your fit in society. Last year, I showed my parents a new television series called “Fresh Off the Boat,” which describes the childhood of Eddie Huang and his family, immigrants from Taiwan. Wanting to learn more of my childhood, I asked my parents if their experiences as immigrants were…

For my Observance of a Stranger assignment, I chose to observe that preacher from my chapel hour. I was drawn to his unique posture when standing still, to his very distinct movements, and to the way he complimented these movements with his facial expressions. In addition, I was able to observe him for a significant length of time (approximately thirty five minutes). To complete my assignment thoroughly, while still listening to the sermon, I took careful notice of his posture, gestures and facial expressions.…
