Paris was the focal point of revolutionary movements and by this point Parisian barricades had become synonymous with revolution. The narrow streets of Paris were easy to barricade and the winding disorganized layout made it difficult for troops to suppress rebellions quickly. The new renovations to Paris were made in hope that with the new layout it would provide quick access for troops and the broad streets would discouraging barricades, so that future revolutions could be avoided. The painting as a whole can be seen as a metaphor to represent the revolutions that occurred in the past and the new future that lies ahead. The storm that happens is symbolic to the fighting that has occur in this city and on this very street.
