For your Discussion Assignment, you will write about the setting of the science fiction world. Was it believable? Can you see this happening in our future? Tell us why you think this story could happen or why you think there is no way a story like it could happen.
For this week’s topic, I chose the short science-fiction story titled: “Paris, at night” by Sung J. Woo. This story takes place in the future where robots exist and where they do manual mechanical works. It starts in a loading dock where two humans – Todd, the protagonist, and Manny Lopez, a laborer suffering from neural trauma – along with a number of robots work. The setting at the beginning of the story is either the loading dock or Todd’s …show more content…
They are very realistic. If it wasn’t for the robots, the flexphoto, and the memrip machine, the whole story would be very relevant to what is happening in today’s real world. I can see this story happening perfectly well in the near future if the advancement in technology continues at the same rhythm. In fact, scientists and researchers have been trying to create robots for a few decades, so it might be only a matter of time until robots appear in our daily lives. The robots depicted in this story only do mechanical work. They are programmed to follow a certain routine and to perform certain tasks perfectly well without any thinking. Additionally, the flexphoto, although not described very well in the short story, would be in my opinion a small device in which slides would pass. Moreover, the memrip machine is probably the greatest innovation in this story. It seems like a well calibrated device that goes into a person’s brain through one ear to collect memories. The operation though doesn’t seem legal although many people are doing it. It gives the impression that is it a great way to make some money. It isn’t 100% risk free though. Therefore certain things can go wrong and can damage one’s brain like what happened for example with Manny Lopez who after the operation suffered neural trauma or with Todd who lost everything related to his wife just like a skyscraper that damages surrounding buildings and the whole community when it falls
