“Blessing” by Jay Parnini is a poem about a lover, appreciating the different blessings in life, one has experienced. Each stanza in the poem are different blessings throughout the speakers life, through each event in the speakers life, Parini vividly describes each beautiful event that has happen in the speakers life. Parini presents the poem, with the appreciation of the ordinary things in life. The way Parnini uses senses to describe an action or feeling in different stanzas, the use of imagery that paints a beautiful picture of these described different occasions, and the use of metaphor to convey a certain deep internal feeling.
To give an illustration of what I mean, the use of senses, to portray a certain feeling during certain occasions. The speaker describes the lover’s senses of taste and touch through many stanzas in the poem, this helps the reader depict, the various senses used in the poem. While reading this poem, it’s imagery based, this allows the reader to imagine the different visual representations, written in the different stanzas. For example stanza two is an great example of imagery, it also includes the variations of senses, written in this stanza. Imagery plays an important role in the poem, the poems is written in a artistic way. This method really helps the reader to vividly image the poem, instead of the poem being written so general. To illustrate, stanza two, “sunning in wet skin on flat, cool rocks” (13). As a result, imagery allows the reader to imagine the different
