In today’s society it’s no surprise when you hear about a married couple who are getting a divorce. Divorce rates have been increasing significantly in the 21st century. According to the American Psychological Association website on average nearly 40 to 50 percent of marriages end in a divorce. Most divorces also have very young children involved, and because of their age they aren’t mature enough to understand the situation. Although a child’s feelings and life should be the priority in a custody battle, giving children the opportunity to participate in a custody battle can increase many damaging and scarring emotional problems for the child. Judges do try to listen to adolescents, especially teenagers, but truthfully adolescents are all unable to handle the pressure of choosing between the two people that are their whole world. Due to these circumstances, children of divorced parents should not be able to choose which parent they live with because they aren’t emotionally and physically developed enough to make such serious decisions and a parent might persuade or bribe …show more content…
Children should not be able to choose which parent to live with because they aren’t emotionally and physically developed enough to make such serious mature decisions. By putting a child in any position to choose which parent they love more and prefer to live with, it will make the child go through a horrifying experience that can leave them traumatized forever. If a child does speak out about their preferences, a parent might even get offended, mad or disappointed with their child.
