In this book, the authors combined their personal experiences and also their professional experiences in creating a user-friendly workbook for parents to read and apply in their lives. Besides of their experience in having child/children with difficult behavior, all of these authors are also experts in this field and they are undoubtedly qualified to write a book on this topic. Their credibility can convince us to follow what they write without hesitation. I think it is really helpful as it makes it easier for parents to follow and understand each

The Permissive parenting style is a ‘no discipline’ approach. This style of parenting usually involves emotional warmth but a reluctance to enforce rules. They use reasoning or manipulation to get what they want but they avoid using evident power (Dewar, 2010). Parents that exercise the Permissive style are indulgent and passive and believe that the way to demonstrate love is to give into their children’s wishes. They invoke phrases such as, “sure, you can stay up late if you want to,” and “you do not need to do any chores if you don’t feel like it.”…

Introduction Functional Communication Training (FCT) “develops alternative behaviors that are sensitive to the EOs that maintain the problem behavior” (Cooper et al., p.497); EOs are establishing operations and FCT does not seek to change EOs. FCT uses differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors (DRA) because FCT interventions help the participant to create an alternative form of communication as an antecedent to the previous problem behavior. The DRA of communication provides the reinforcer that has maintained the problem behavior (screaming, falling to the floor), which provides extinction of the problem behavior and a replacement behavior that contains the same reinforcement. “FCT can be viewed as an application of mand training”…

The continuum for acceptable behavior is quite broad. A child who is very active is not seen as a problem but as a child who needs to move around during the day, and adaptations are made for that child. Drugs are not given to children for behavior problems. Adaptations are made in the environment through thoughtful observation of the child. Children are valued because of their differences and are not medicated or expected to change.…

However, my dad would then apologize and say that I was not punished.…

The book by Rachel Janney and Martha Snell titled, Behavioral Support, was a great read for any teacher, administrator, or other school staff member. Behavioral Support provided many suggestions for students who need more positive behavioral support in school to help them be successful. The text gave me more insight on how behavior is learned and can be changed. The text posed the following question, “Why do people act in ways that are difficult to understand, disturbing to others, and even destructive to self, others, and property?”(Janney, Snell, 5). This question really made me reflect on my own experiences as a teacher in working with students who have been distracted and/or hard to understand.…

I would like to extend my sincerest thanks for taking your time to consider my candidacy for the Educational Psychology/School Psychology program at the University of Wisconsin. I have always been drawn to behavioral psychology, the phenomenon of learning, and educational processes. After discovering that I had a special talent for working with children and at-risk youth, I eagerly began my academic pursuit in elementary education. With ever-increasing learning demands, and limited time and resources, I quickly learned that inevitably some children fail to perform adequately among their peers. This reality came quite clear to me through my experience working and substitute teaching in a public elementary school.…
