No one teaches humans how to be parents so what does a child expect from the person they call mom or dad? A child wants to feel loved, they want to feel trust, and they want acceptance and attention. The different parenting styles and the factors have to be taken into consideration such as time, the environment, and the social and psychological aspects as well. There are four different parenting styles according to Diana Baumrind, a well-known psychologist for her research on parenting styles in the 1940s. The four styles are the permissive, authoritarian, authoritative, and uninvolved parenting, based on her studies, from what she formed her Pillar theory. Each parents needs to meet the needs of their child. In a situation where the child broke a vase, the permissive parent would console the child and say its “okay” while the authoritarian parent would be furious and punish the child without an explanation, teaching the child that if they do something bad it will lead to punishment. The authoritative parent would sit with the child and explain that they should be more careful and give a reasonable punishment. These styles have a lasting effect on the uprising of the child and can be modified by the social expectations. This would deprive them of living their own experiences and of finding their own solutions. Even if the parent chooses to be an authoritative parents because it is the best, it will not be achieved, “the process of internalizing cultural values – leave us with a set of rigid categories for “good” and “bad” parents, narrow conceptions of how parents should look, talk, and behave toward their children” (Rereading America 5). Parents have to meet their child’s needs and at the same time make sure they meet the expectation of being an exceptional parent. In some cases authoritative parenting may be successful because these children show a higher level of independence, personal responsibility, maturity, social skills, and academic achievement” (Dominguez 3). The authoritative parenting style “includes certain democratic practices--like taking children’s preferences into account when making family plans, or encouraging kids to express their own, possibly divergent, opinions” (Dewar). Democratic values of children in the family are absent in other cultures, where they preferably take in the authoritarian style. Upbringing has its lasting effects that stick to the child that eventually, children will parent just how they were raised. Nurture plays a huge role such that “Mother’s embrace the idea that child rearing is their job, and they see themselves as primarily responsible for the well-being of their children” (Keeler 1).Whatever they are raised in is what is normal for them. As an authoritative parents they are accepting to their child are they look out for them with their motherly instinct. Society will give people expectations and rules on how to raise a child. Parents have to assimilate to the modern values and have an open mind in how they will teach their children and also have a high acceptance if their child comes to adopt a modern belief they weren’t raised to. A child will unconsciously remember the teachings their parent always gave them. These words of wisdom will come into effect once the child grows up and begins to raise a child of their own where they may develop any of the four parenting
