Qualitative Parenting Styles

In today’s society, students of all ages illustrate a reflection of how they are raised based on their academic achievement. The specific ways that these students are being raised are categorized into three different parenting styles. The three main qualitative parenting styles include authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive (Glasgow, Dornbusch, Troyer, Steinberg & Ritter, 1997). It is important to know that educational outcomes are not solely based on the efforts of the student. The successes or failures that a student may come across may be attributed to factors that the student cannot control. One of these factors that the student cannot control is parenting styles. The proposed research study will examine how parenting styles …show more content…
This topic is important to study because academic achievements are not always achieved by what the student has done. Academic achievements can also be a reflection of how the child is raised. There are three hypotheses that will be tested: First, authoritarian parenting in Canadian children will be positively associated with academic achievement. Second, permissive parenting in Canadian children will be negatively associated with academic achievement. Third, Canadian adolescents raised through authoritarian parenting will be more likely to have high rates of academic achievement when compared to Canadian children raised through permissive …show more content…
The first limitation is the self-reported data in one part on the questionnaire. The questionnaire includes the students to self-report their grades they have received in school. This may allow for some students to lie or hide the truth of their real grades due to either embarrassment or shame. The second limitation is location of the study. For more accurate results, it would be wise to do the same study in different parts of the world as well. Due to budget limitations this cannot be done. This will limit the study mostly to Canadian students. A third limitation is time constraints. In order to accurately sample 200 students in a questionnaire, the researcher should allow for as much time as possible. For budget reasons the researchers are only permitted to stay for a total of five days. If the researchers had more time and a higher budget then perhaps they could stay longer, sample more participants, and get more accurate

However, while there were strengths, the study had a few weaknesses as well with the design of the study. One weakness was the small sample size. One such limitation is the sample size, if it is too small, the data may not be enough to establish significance. When dealing with self-reported data, there are chances of bias, selective memory or exaggeration. The fact that self-reported data cannot be verified, may lead to inconsistencies in results. The inventory to monitor progress is another limitation that if not selected carefully, can inhibit data analysis. A prime example is that MDI or Hamilton Rating Scale may be deficient of specific questions necessary for the study.…

Parenting styles play a critical role in the development of a child. In fact, research shows that parenting styles can impact a child’s social, cognitive, and emotional growth. To demonstrate, the authoritarian parenting style elicits an environment that is low in warmth and high in control. This type of relationship between the parent and the child can lead to potential difficulties with the child, such as diminished self-regulation in the absence of authority, diminished self-esteem, and emotional instability that may be displayed as irritability, anxiety, and/or anger (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). On the opposite end of the spectrum is the permissive parenting style, which is high in warmth and low in control. This type of relationship promotes an environment in which children display the propensity to “exhibit uncontrolled, impulsive behavior” as well as higher levels of aggressive behavior (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015, p. 182). While it is evident that the parenting styles discussed impact the development of the child and the presentation of characteristics and behaviors, the counselor must also consider factors influencing development such as culture and environment, which are discussed…

Parenting style has a major impact on child development as experiences from childhood have a lasting impact on the emotional well-being of a child. Several studies have demonstrated the effects of parenting style on both a child’s emotional development and behavior. Identified by Diana Baumrind in the mid-1960s, there are three parenting styles including authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive which define the attitudes of parents towards their children. Each style brings about different positive or negative characteristics in children, with authoritative parenting proving to be the most positive and permissive being the most negative. Based on my research, I believe that the relationships we have with our parents greatly influences our…
