Parenting and the relationships built can largely affect how a child succeeds academically, as well as their self-esteem. Newman et al. (2015) conducted a study to determine the relationship between parenting styles and student’s achievement and self-esteem. They conducted the study in China, Turkey, and the United States. The participants were students enrolled in universities thus, they were emerging adults. As predicted, the United States had higher reports of authoritative parenting, which directly linked to higher high school achievement. Research shows that this could be because of the problem solving and decision making that is associated with authoritative parenting. While this form of parenting associated with higher academic success, it did not impact the child’s self esteem. Other contexts may also play an important role on the developmental outcomes of children and parents. Community is one context that can influence parenting styles. White, Zeiders, Gonzales, Tein, & Roosa (2013) conducted a study to see if Mexican-American perceptions of violence in their neighborhood influenced their pattern of parenting. In respect to culture, Mexican-American parents tend to display characteristics of authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles. Using self-reports and profile analyses researchers analyzed Mexican-American families. The results showed high reports of neighborhood danger increased when one style of parenting was chose over another. This portrays that the combination of styles used with Mexican-American families, can help to impact the developmental outcomes, regardless of the community (White et al.,2013). The positive behavior demonstrates in these Mexican-American parents’ stresses the importance of family. This placed importance on family accentuates loyalty and harmony between family members. During reports of high neighborhood danger, it can be important to have these values because children feel the need to be obedient. However, this obedience is not in a harsh way like that of authoritarian parenting (White et al.,
