When a couple is expecting, they take into consideration the multiple aspects of their newborn’s life. The parents will evaluate the community and the economic growth of the area where they reside. In addition, the parents will also choose the best school systems and churches to attend. Parents want the best possible opportunities for their children. Many parents also reflect back onto their own childhood and strive to give their children opportunities that weren’t presented to them. He states that for some children, helicopter parents can be useful to young adults who are late bloomers and have not matured fully. Aucoin mentions that there are many reasons that parents are still needed in their child’s day-to-day life as technical adults because of “emotional, social, sexual, logistical, and psychological” reasons (225). He also mentions that because of the state of the economy, helicopter parents can also allocate benefits for their child as counselors, or providers for the multiple numerous costs of college. In the case of having a child who is not particularly ready to move on with life and branch out on their own, this may be helpful. To children who wish to be mature and independent, this style of parenting may be harmful. Helicopter parenting restricts children from trying to identify how to live and succeed on their own. Further aspects that can be harmful in this scenario is that the parent will be viewed as a best friend other than a position of authority. Each style contains great attributes. People want to teach their children to have motivation and to succeed. Parents should not have unattainable expectations for their children that would prohibit them from maturing and learning to express themselves and their feelings. Chua’s tiger parenting style gave her children great academics, a talent in playing at least one of the hardest instruments to learn, discipline and accountability. However, Chua’s children lack social skills. Parents want to be able to trust their children and ensure they have valuable social skills, but they do not want their children to get themselves into trouble. A more relaxed Western parenting style encourages children to learn, to be themselves and to hold relationships among other people. Parents should be involved in aspects of their children’s lives such as academics, their friends and dating relationships, what type of people they associate with and where they go, but not every single aspect. There is a fine line between a friend and a parent. In addition, a parent needs to establish that they will always be there for their child but there are some things that the parent will not condone.
